Sexercise as Exercise?

We have all heard that in addition to the pleasure component of sexual activity, there is also a salutary benefit to be derived in the form of calories burned. This is true . . . to a degree. Unfortunately, sex is not really a substitute for traditional physical exercise. For example, if you weigh about 150 pounds and have vigorous sexual activity for twenty minutes (it’s just a number!), you will burn about 35 calories. Running for twenty minutes burns 261 calories. Walking at a leisurely 2 MPH for twenty minutes burns 63 calories. Running or walking are clearly not as much fun, but they are certainly more effective as exercise. The take-away from this is: sex is a wonderful complement to normal, regular exercise (which can improve your sex life by boosting your libido and promoting the body systems that support sexual function like blood flow and endurance) Exercising with a “special” someone can certainly be a prelude to romance, so remember that vertical activity can lead to horizontal fun!
