First Date Food Faux-Pas

We caution against the following foods on a first date because the truth is that, unless you are really close with your companion (third date?), there is a good chance these entrees can leave you somewhat worse for wear! Since the cliché is “you only get one chance to make a first impression,” here are our no-no’s for that special initial meal:

  • Entrees eaten with your hands (sandwiches, pizza, fajitas, barbecue, etc.). There is a good chance that these foods will leave their mark on your lips or chin for at least the time it takes to mop it up with your napkin. And your napkin starts to look pretty unappealing after two or three trips to your mouth anyway!
  • Stringy Pastas. The possibility of slurping long strands of spaghetti and the “spray” that it may also create puts this on our avoid list. However, go with the other shapes of pasta if you want – orecchiette, farfalle, penne.
  • Spinach Dip. Little green specks destined for the spaces between your teeth. The same goes for corn on the cob. Don’t even try to clean your teeth at the table if you think there might be a problem. Excuse yourself… but don’t say we didn’t warn you (see below).
  • Overly spicy foods. This is not the time for your intestines to stage a dietary uprising. Play it safe.

Avoid leaving your date at the table to go to the men’s room whenever possible. Carry breath freshener but wait until she goes to the ladies room . . . that’s your moment to palm one. (Let it quietly dissolve. Don’t “crack” it in your mouth, Casanova!)
