Hurricane Season is Here

Hard to believe, but we started Hurricane Season on June 1st and it looks like 2013 is shaping up to be an active one!

On June 3, Colorado State University released its updated hurricane season forecast, with 18 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes.  The organization stated that an El Niño was not likely to hinder Atlantic tropical cyclone activity and sea surface temperatures were expected to be favorable for the development of such. CSU stated there was a 72% chance of at least one major hurricane impacting any stretch of coastline on the United States, a 48% chance of at least one major hurricane striking the United States East Coast, and a 47% chance of at least one major hurricane striking the United States Gulf Coast.  These values are much above the averages of 52%, 31%, and 30%, respectively.

So what are we to do?  Well, prudence dictates that we start to stockpile the items that will inventory well for the six-month period (through November) and are the most likely to be quickly depleted if a hurricane warning is posted.  Bottled water, canned foods, and batteries are easy to get now but will fly off the shelves if a storm approaches.  If you were even thinking about getting a generator last year, do it ASAP before the rush starts as the season continues to develop.

We here in the Northeast well remember the destruction that Superstorm Sandy visited on us, and that was not even classified as a hurricane when it made landfall.  It makes sense to do a little preparedness now – just in case!

Here is a list of the names that will be used to identify storms in 2013 (the first two have already been used as we write this!)
