Should I Replace My Out Dated Electronics

Dear Hal,
First off, let me say that I enjoy your website and I am a woman. I have been divorced for over ten years and I am in my 60s. I live in a wonderful community and have made many friends of both sexes. I know it is almost football season. I am not a big fan of the game (I prefer baseball and reading books, actually) but I also know from living in my apartment that there are many “parties” that are centered around these games. I am not a wealthy woman but I am comfortable. Do you think I should invest in a new television and sound system to make my place a go-to destination for watching the game with others? I have been to Sunday game get-togethers in other units here and would like to reciprocate, but my old electronics are clearly not up to the task. Is this a worthwhile expense for a non-fan??
Dear Dorothy,
I admire your willingness to make this kind of investment solely for social purposes. However, I vote no. You can certainly host other events in your apartment during the course of the year to reciprocate without purchasing new electronic hardware that it doesn’t seem you will likely use all that much. I would think in terms of a “leaves changing” cocktail party or a “no reason at all” get-together for your friends and prior hosts. Put your money towards these kinds of parties (it will cost far less than state-of-the-art home theater equipment) and enjoy yourself on your terms.
