Host An “Adult” Halloween Party?

Halloween isn’t really an “official” holiday. You still get mail and the banks are open. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t celebrate it. In fact, it is probably the one day of the year that weirdness is almost institutionalized!

This year, why not have a Halloween party that is geared to us Suddenly Solo types who don’t mind being a little risqué? Here are some ideas:

- Who’s Who?
Tell guests you’ll provide the costumes but ask that all the women dress in red and the guys in black (offer a prize for sexiest outfit). Get colorful masks at a party supply store (they’re cheap) and hand them out to guests. You’ll be amazed at how secret identities will make guests lose their inhibitions.

-Creating atmosphere
Easily done with lighting. Using only candles for lighting can add to the scary Halloween scene, but it also adds a romantic and seductive atmosphere. If you are concerned about candlelight you can always use low lights, battery candles or black light bulbs. You can add to mood with scented candles. Cinnamon is not only aphrodisiac but it also adds to an autumn-winter mood. Curtains are also great for creating atmosphere. You can use transparent red or black curtains to separate your living room from your dining room. And don’t forget the old standby . . . a few buckets of dry ice.

- Be Devilish with the Drinks
Check out these spooky sippers:

  • Blood bath: In a shaker, combine 4 parts blood-orange juice, 2 parts Montecristo rum, 1 part Myers’s Dark Rum, 1 part grenadine, and ice. Strain into martini glasses, garnishing with a slice of blood orange.
  • Witchypoo: Dust martini glasses with cocoa powder. In a shaker, combine ice, 2 parts Godiva dark-chocolate liqueur, 2 parts Godiva white-chocolate liqueur, 2 parts green crème de menthe, and 2 parts vodka. Shake and strain into glasses.

- Food
For get-togethers like this, a buffet is always best. You can pre-order colt cuts etc. and get some seasonal serving items. You can also ask guests to bring a dish which can make things a little easier for you.

-Play it for laughs
A “made for the moment” prop that can be fun are these “blue” pumpkins . . . regular pumpkins that are carved with sexy and suggestive images. Check out Adults only here.
