There are times when you want a movie experience to be up-lifting.  Many of us would agree that these are just such times.  Fortunately, there is a film that delivers . . . “Lion.”

The quick synopsis is this:  a five-year-old Indian boy, Saroo gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, a thousand miles from tiny rural home. He does not speak the local language, he cannot explain where he comes from and he survives many life-threatening challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia; 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. It’s a true story.

But the film is much more than that

First off, the casting is remarkable. First-timers in the role of the youngsters are incredible and screen veterans like Nicole Kidman, Dev Patel and Rooney Mara just shine. Then there is the actual filming of the story.  Gritty street scenes, panoramic vistas, revealing facial close-ups that all interweave to paint a truly fascinating portrait of lives in often terrifying inertia.

“Lion” is an adventure in both large and small ways.  It grabs you and will not let go. We urge you not to read too much about the film so that the movie can surprise you completely.

Definitely a date movie. Bring tissues.
