Back-to-School Prices & Tax Breaks, Too

Many states offer sales tax exemptions this time of year that, when added into back-to-school pricing, can make shopping very attractive for us (and grandchildren, too!).  Although there are many restrictions to the tax deals, for the most part, clothing items and computers are included.

For example, in Florida, the following are exempt during certain times: clothing with a sales price of $75 or less per item, school supplies with a sales price of $15 or less per item, and personal computers and related accessories with a sales price of $750 or less purchased for non-commercial use. The holiday exemption does not apply to sales of such items made within a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment, or airport.

There are 17 states that offer tax breaks geared at back-to-school shoppers, but retailers in all states always reduce prices during this period.  So if you are thinking about upgrading your computer or doing some clothes shopping, this is a pretty good time to do it.  Be prepared to fight off crazed parents in the backpack aisle, however!
