Who We Are

SuddenlySolo.org is a definitive site for the mature widowed or divorced man. It provides a positive sense of renewal, as well as offers valuable advice on how to move forward into this next exciting chapter of their lives. The information on the website and in the book (Suddenly Solo…the guide) is based on intensive and extensive research through surveys, in-depth interviews, eye tracking, and other techniques. Its aim is to provide these men with a better understanding of their new status, and to give them the confidence and skills in their interpersonal relationships that will enable them to achieve new levels of happiness and satisfaction in their lives.



A sociologist by training, Hal in his varied career, has been a teaching fellow in art (CCNY), served on the NYS governor’s commission on graduate school education (SUNY) and after service in the US Army, co founded in 1968 McCollum Spielman Worldwide, a market and communication research company whose unique services are available in 53 countries. In 2008 he retired as chairman of MSW.

Over his long career, Hal has been a frequent speaker at the Association of National Advertisers, the American Marketing Association and the Advertising Research Foundation. Hal has been President of the Market Research Council, President of the Copy Research Council and has chaired multiple conferences for the AMA and the ARF. Currently, he is a research advisor to the Ad Council. In 2008, he was elected by his peers to the Market Research Hall of Fame.

Hal has had a long association with the Optometric Center of NY (part of SUNY and one of the largest eye care and research centers in the US). He served as its president for 8 years and was awarded the distinguished Ben Franklin Medal for his on going efforts there. In 2007 he established the multi-discipline Spielman Social Science Lab at his Alma Mater, The City College of New York.

In his home community, he has served on the Sands Pt. Park Commission and currently sits on the Sands Pt. Planning Board. Additionally, he is on the Foundation Board of the Port Washington Public Library (one of only 50 five star libraries in the country).

Hal currently resides in Sands Pt., NY and is the widowed father of three sons.



Marc is the Creative Director and Co-Founder of Suddenly Solo.

His career has been characterized by successfully creating brand awareness and building strong business relationships in all his endeavors.

He helped develop and expand the Accountemps and Robert Half Personnel service to international prominence as President of the multi-office New York City operation. He became a spokesperson for the company and appeared on many television and radio shows discussing hiring and employment issues. After selling the company, he created innovative communications strategies for online placement operations as well as developing hiring and marketing functions for environmentally-focused campaigns and for established firms looking to modernize their image, outreach and internal systems.

While helping a friend who was writing what would become a hugely successful book on personal investing, he discovered he had a talent for creating accessible, informative and friendly prose. So when his golf-buddy, Hal Spielman was re-adjusting to life following his wife’s passing they both realized there was a profound lack of “how-to” information for mature men who found themselves in similar situations. Marc’s skills in writing and marketing fit perfectly with Hal’s personal and professional experience and they created Suddenly Solo, LLC to help men navigate this new chapter in their lives.

Marc is a graduate of New York University and is active in a wide variety of civic activities including holding elective office in his village government.
